The Castor Underground Natural Gas Storage (UGS) facility is needed to help meet the urgent need for additional gas storage capacity in Spain. Castor UGS is ideally located on the highly industrialized eastern Mediterranean coast of Spain, with onshore facilities to be constructed 15 kilometres (9 miles) inland from the coastal town of Vinaròs and additional facilities and wells to be located 21 kilometres (13 miles) offshore over a depleted underground oil reservoir. Through its strategic partnership Eurogas has an indirect ownership interest in the Castor Project.

Eurogas has been planning, promoting and advancing the Castor UGS project since first recognizing the opportunity in 1995. Eurogas led Castor through its early stages, including technical evaluations and environmental study, reservoir testing including well drilling, front end engineering and design, and key regulatory steps, before entering into a strategic partnership with senior Spanish companies to move the project into the financing and EPC phases.
